For parents

Your teen does not want to go to school

Find the reason first — then discuss routines and next steps.

School refusal can hide anxiety, bullying, burnout, or social fear. "Just get ready" rarely works without understanding what feels unsafe or overwhelming.

Pattern: anxiety, overload, or bullying.

Start with curiosity, not blame. Agree on the smallest possible step this week. Bring in school and a counselor if anxiety or bullying is involved.

Steps

  1. Ask without blame: "What's hardest about school right now?"
  2. Pick a minimal step: one class, one teacher talk, one recovery day.
  3. If bullying or severe anxiety — involve school and a professional.

Try saying

"I see school feels scary or heavy right now. Let's figure out one thing we can change this week."

Avoid

"Just get it together", grade threats, comparing to other kids.
